how can i remove programs listed in the startup tab
that are no longer on the system
removed spyware etc and when i run selective startup they
are just unchecked - if i run normal startup they are all
checked again

Uncheck the entries in msconfig>startup that are no longer needed, then run
the following file from Kelly's web site:
