msconfig window appears and disappears

Hi Everyone

Everytime I open the msconfig window it appears and
disappears after about a second. Same for the norton
antivirus window. All others work O.K. Running XP home
full version OEM.

Thanks for any help

Does the same thing happen if you bring up the Task Manager window?
(Ctrl+Shift+Esc). I would try to manuall run a virus scan. Even though
the AV windows won't open, I think if you search the Symantec website,
they should have directions on how to run it using the command prompt or
you could reboot in Safe mode and try it.

Another thing you can try, if your system is clean, is to run the System
File Checker. Open the command prompt and type sfc.exe. This will show
a list of options to use. This program will compare your system files
with what the OS think they should be and replace any that are wrong.
This may have some adverse effects on other programs but I haven't
experienced that with the many times I've used it.

Greg,

It's caused by viruses. Run a full system virus scan. [Online]

Greetings --

The type of behavior you describe, which also often applies to
Taskmgr.exe and Regedit.exe, is typical behavior of more than one
virus/worm, the three below being the most common:

W32.Klez
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/[email protected]

W32.Yaha
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/[email protected]

W32.Spybot.Worm
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.spybot.worm.html

Because many of the newer viruses and worms, such as the
Spybot mentioned above, can disable antivirus applications whose
definitions aren't kept up-to-date, try using one or more of the free
on-line scanners to double-check your system.

Trend Micro - Free online virus Scan

McAfee Security - FreeScan
