Suddenly msconfig generates an "error report", followed immediatedly
by Dr. Watson sending an "error report". Same thing in Safe Mode.
My usual housekeeping utilities have all been run and theoetically, my
system (XP Home SP2) is clean. Suggestions?

try system restore to see if you can rollback to date before it broke.

Many thanks for the tip, appreciated. I was hopeful that I could
avoid having to reinstall a bunch of software since 28 Nov when I lost
msconfig.exe.

Somebody kindly shared with me their correct copy of msconfig.exe.

My copy of msconfig.exe was:

158,136 bytes 11/28/2005

The correct copy is:

145,408 bytes 08/29/2002

The difference in size was 12,728 bytes, about what could be
expected if a virus attached itself to that executable.
However, my virus checker failed to pick it up. By chance, surprise,
surprise, 11/28/2005 was the date that msconfig.exe became unavailable
to me.

Would not let me delete the old one, nor overwrite with the new
one. Had to reboot into Safe Mode (Administrator) in order to
be able to delete the offending msconfig.exe. Only then
could I copy over the correct one..

Very much appreciate the help of those who responded.

Terry Smythe
