MS XP WordPad

I just purchased a new computer equipped with MS XP ; WordPad is what I use
to create simple docs. I cannot find any way to check spelling. Is there no
spellchecker on the program?!

Not true. Google for "WordPad spell checker" and you will find a lot of free spell checkers that
work in WordPad.

Back in the old days if you installed something better such as Word
you could use that spellchecker on wordpad but that defeats the
purpose I guess!

No, there isn't. However, there are third-party spelling checkers that
work with it.

I like Textpad for text documents.

It is free for apparent unlimited evaluation, flexible, more options
that I will ever use, built in spell checker you can easily edit/add
to, good for programmers and, very decent support and forums the few
times I have needed it. I did eventually buy about 5 years ago since
I felt guilty and the actually helped me a couple times. I think it
was $20-$25, but I don't think the eval ever expired on me.

The spell check isn't as fancy as some, but adequate for me.

No, WordPad is an extremely simple program. This is one of many things
it can't do.

You might be interested in checking out Open Office
(www.openoffice.org). It's a free office suite that contains, among
other things, a full functioned word processor.
