Not sure if I can get an ans. here for a MS Works question or not. If
xp.general isn't would you direct me to correct group?

tks.

anyway....

My daughter uses a new PC with XP Home Edit, I.E. 6.0, OE 6.0 and MS Works
8.0 and created a spreadsheet and somehow got the suffix changed from .wks
to .xlr and I tried opening the file on my XP Home edit with an older vers.
of MSWorks and couldn't open the file, went through the usual associate file
with etc., my question is how does this happen? and can I open it on my end
ever?

tks again all

FYI for future issues on Works or if the other post by Yuri doesn't help
(but it looks like it should), there is a Works newsgroup:

Hi Bill,

Have you tried the good ole fashioned just changing the file extension in
windows explorer? Just rename file from *****.xlr to *****.xls and then it
should open like normal.

Microsoft® Works Version 8.0 is Works 2005.

Microsoft® Works Spreadsheet = wksss.exe.

Newer versions of wksss.exe can open older version files. Older versions of
wksss.exe cannot open newer version saved files. With newer versions of
wksss.exe you can do a Save As to save files that earlier versions can open.

Have your daughter do a Save As for the file; Works 7.0 (*.xlr) or Works 4.x
(*.wks) or Works for Windows 3.0 SS (*.wks) or Works for Windows 2.0/Works
for DOS (*.wks). For whatever version of Works that you have.

Newer versions of wksss.exe (Microsoft® Works Spreadsheet) should open both
..wks and .xlr files.

File Extension .wks
File Class MSWorks4Sheet
File Description Microsoft Works Spreadsheet
Files of .wks will be listed in the File Types dialog box as Microsoft Works
Spreadsheet.

File Extension .xlr
File Class MSWorks4Sheet
File Description Microsoft Works Spreadsheet
Files of .xlr will be listed in the File Types dialog box as Microsoft Works
Spreadsheet.

Works for Microsoft Windows Versions:
Microsoft Works 2.0 (Windows 3.x)
Microsoft Works 3.0 (Windows 3.x)
Microsoft Works 4.0, 4.0a, 4.5 and 4.5a (Windows 95)
Microsoft Works 2000 (v.5) (Microsoft Works Suite 2000)
Microsoft Works 6.0 (Microsoft Works Suite 2001 and 2002)
Microsoft Works 7.0 (Microsoft Works Suite 2003 and 2004)
Microsoft Works 8.0 (Microsoft Works Suite 2005)
Microsoft Works 8.5 free update for 8.0 (Microsoft Works Suite 2006)

tks all for helping me out with this inconvenience. My daughter brought up
the file and "save as" 4.0 wks in dialog box and then sent it on to me and
worked fine.(its just hard trying to explain this on the phone to a novice
user! My concern is why this should happen at all, MSWks files should open
in all works programs for gods sakes.

Glad you got it worked out, Bill.
My concern is why this should happen at all, MSWks files
should open in all works programs for gods sakes.

Because whenever almost any software company makes a new version of almost
any program they work just like that. Whatever improvements they have made
in the newer versions do not translate to the older versions. MS Word and
Excel both have the option of saving files in older version format.

I have AutoCAD Light 2000 and my boss had the same version. When folks
would send my boss a drawing file he got tired of asking to please save in
the 2000 version so he bought AutoCAD Light 2005. I still have the 2000
version. So almost every time he sends me a file he forgets to save in the
older version format and I have to call him and ask him to save the file
correctly for me and E-mail it to me again. He keeps threatening to get me
a newer version, but I haven't seen it yet. ;-)

MS Word and Excel and AutoCAD are just three other programs that I can think
of off the top of my head that work that work that way, there are more.

My guess is that the theory that all software makers probably go by is that
most people will get fed up like my boss did and break down and buy a newer
version. $$$$
