MS Works Calendar error message and shuts down

When the reminder box comes up, I try to open and change the reminder (from 2
weeks to 1 week, etc.). As soon as I click on either "this occrence" or "open
the series", I get "Microsoft® Works Calendar has encountered a problem and
needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

At that point it shuts down. It has happened multiple times, (every time) no
matter which appointment I am being reminded of. It also happens if I try to
update/change it using the menu and not the pop up reminder window.

Any ideas?

Post this in the MS Works newsgroup. That's where you'll find the Works
experts. It is microsoft.public.works.win. Make sure you include the
version of Works you are using when you post there.

When I clicked it I suddenly had a new folder in my Outlook Express filled
with about 50 email questions. Was that what I was supposed to get? How do I
ask the question there?

Yes, that's what you're supposed to get. To ask a question, click New Post
at top. To Reply to a post (those are "posts" not emails), click Reply
Group. Clicking Reply will send an email to the person, not a reply to the
group, and it will probably fail because people use fake email addresses so
that web-crawlers don't add them to mailing lists. You should, too. Just
make sure it can't possibly be real. Don't want to add someone else to
mailing lists. Something like (e-mail address removed) (These settings are in
Tools>Accounts>News tab.

You also want to go to View menu>Current View and check "Group messages by
conversation". Helps it all make sense.

Now you can stop using this clunky web interface that you've been using.

They're Newsgroup posts actually, not emails. Each one is threaded so
you can look at an original post, and its many replies by clicking the
plus (+) to the left.

You can also post your own questions there and get answers from
volunteers versed in that subject.

Oh gosh, now I've registered with my real email. If I use a fake one how
does it get to my inbox? I know you said they are posts, but they are in my
Outlook Express (which I don't like). I found a place online to register...
now how do I put a fake email?

Why do things have to be so complicated, I'm an old lady!

This is too stressful. I now have over 500 "posts" in my inbox. None of which
answer my question. I'm going to bed now, I can't do this any more.

Hmmm.. I think we're talking about two different things. I'll follow your
earlier path and see exactly what it is that happened. Doesn't sound like
what I thought... I'll get back to you tomorrow. Don't give up.

OK, I checked it out and it's as I first said. Only I can only count some
350 messages in that group. What you should have is a new folder for the
newsgroup, below all your other folders. The messages aren't in your Inbox,
they're in their own folder. The folder is called
"microsoft.public.works.win". Am I right so far? Right above that folder (on
left column) is an entry named msnews.microsoft.com. That's the Account. If
you click on that, you'll see the newsgroup listed again and a button called
Synchronize and another called Newsgroups. When you click on the newsgroup,
the buttons at the top of OE should include New Post, Reply Group and Reply,
among others.

To ask a question, click on New Post and write your message, then Send. But
first, go to Tools menu, Accounts, click on the News tab if it isn't already
selected, then double-click the account listed there. On that first panel,
where it says Email address, put in the fake address I suggested. It's OK to
use your own name, but perhaps you don't want to use a full name. Just Nancy
will do fine.

Using OE, once you get used to it, is really easy, much easier to use than
the web interface.. If you set the View like I suggested, to Group by
Conversation, it will make more sense. While you're in that folder, if you
press Ctrl-H, you will only see threads where you have posted something. And
don't worry about how many messages there are. Once you have the hang of it,
you can also click on that Newsgroups button and add any newsgroup you want
to the account. See if you can add this one, or just click here:
news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.windowsxp.general

When you are more comfortable, come back and we'll tell you how to clean up
messages and keep them to a manageable size. For that, I use Message Rules.
