G'Day Mike,

Word has two 'typing' modes: Insert and Overtype. What you
describe is Overtype, and should also see 'clearly' the letters OVR
in the status bar at the bottom of Word's Window.

You can use the Insert key to switch between these modes. In Insert
mode, the letters OVR are greyed out.

Press the Insert key once to switch between Overtype mode (what
you are in now) and Insert mode.

In addition to the others, I had a keyboard that had a funky spacebar. I
must have done something to one end of it and although I definitely hit the
spacebar, I didn't get a space.

I got a new keyboard.
