how do trouble shoot spacing between words

Every word I type automatically connects with the next word I key in -
leaving no space between them, even though I press the space bar after typing
each word.

How do I format one space between each word?

Thank you for your help

Does this happen with new documents only? Or does it affect existing
documents as well?
