MS Word 97 - preventing auto-reformatting of headings?

How can I fix things so that MS Word 97 *never again* automatically
reformats a document when I open it. I have a major problem with it
automatically reformatting text into Headings.

This seems to often happen when I save a document with a new
name and then re-open it. But it also sometimes happens even
without renaming a document.

I've already taken the logical step of going to
Tools / Autocorrect / Autoformat

and unclicking Apply to:
Headings
Lists
Bulleted lists
etc.

And the same for Autoformat as you type.

But it still happens.

Is there a way to fix this? If not, is there a way to undo it when it
happens?
Ctrl-z doesn't seem to work.

The chief culprit is "Define styles based on your formatting." But also make
sure that whatever template you are using doesn't have "Automatically update
document styles" checked in Tools | Templates and Add-ins.
