MS Word 2003 slow with VPN access

I know this may be a shot in the dark, but are there any known issues and or
solutions for Word responding slower when using VPN access. We have a few
users that when they connect through VPN their Word 2003 program grinds to a
halt and the processor seems to max out at near 100% utilization.

It's almost surely the VPN or the users' internet access.
