MS Windows Network???

Hello....

My Mom's home PC is networked to points unknown. She has Bellsouth DSL
only. Here's the deal.... Exploring under "My Network Places" then
"Microsoft Windows Network" then "Mshome"... Mshome can't be expanded, nor
can I explore or open it. Properties shows a very generic box with only a
"General" tab with Mshome with a 3 PC network type icon....and "Type" reads
"Microsoft Windows Network". With OK/Cancel and Apply buttons, with Apply
shaded and not usuable. When I attempt to Explore Mshome, a box appears
titled "Windows Explorer"... Red circle at left with a white "X"...reads =
"Mshome is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network
resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have
access permissions. The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently
available."

I've posted numerous hack suspected issues in the past with no avail and
I've ran ANY and ALL programs on this PC. ie. Stinger, CWShredder, HJT,
SS&D, Ad-Aware, Panda, etc., etc. Nothing. The only thing that found
anything of note was "Silent Runners" that picked up =

HOSTS file
----------

C:\WINDOWS\System32\drivers\etc\HOSTS

maps: 3 domain names to IP addresses,
2 of the IP addresses are *not* localhost!

----------

Sys. Info = XP Home v2002 SP2 -- Dell P4 2.8 / 512 -- all updates current --
Norton Internet Security 2005 & MS AntiSpyware beta...

Thanks very much in advance for the help!

It sounds to me as though the PC is not networked or set up for sharing in
any fashion and hence it wont allow you to browse the workgroup.

The hosts file sounds a bit strange though - I would note the extra entries
then delete them. You could try a Whois web site to try and identify what the
IPs relate to.

MG,

What is the problem here? That her computer can see no other computers? Or
that she can see the MSHome workgroup, but no other computers? What would you
prefer to see?

How is her computer connected? Any LAN? Is she directly connected to DSL
without a firewall or router?

If her computer is in workgroup MSHome, it's likely that any nearby computer is
too. The fact that she can see MSHome, but no computers, in the browse list
(Network Neighborhood) is not, by itself, a call for alarm.

Your described scenario is not too unlikely, given the right combination of
settings on her computer, and one other (a neighbours?).
# Registry setting restrictanonymous.
# Misconfigured / overlooked firewall.
# Browser conflict.

Provide "browstat status", "ipconfig /all", and a listing of the Hosts file,
from her computer, and let's see if it's a likely hack. Read this article, and
learn how to extract and post those diagnostics:
