MS Security patch + server restart

Is there any way that we can apply a security patch effectively without restarting the web server? I don't want to restart my web server once a week. I tried to post this in Windows update newsgroup, and it is throwing some dotnet error.

If the files the patch affects are in use, ie already loaded and you
don't reboot how do you suppose the patch will be effective?
