MS Patch: Subsequent Integration Problems

Linda Santucci

In November I had downloaded a Patch from Microsoft that I
believe I may have downloaded out of order. Ever since, I
have had the following problems. However, I am aware from
the MS site that apparently Windows XP is under R&D for an
SP2 Update; SP1 is no longer available for reinstallation, etc.

Problems:

.... Constant, sudden disconnects from my ISP modem internet
connection. This is even in the middle of operations that
seem to initiate the disconnect.

.... XP OS does not "recognize" that I have Internet
Explorer on my system, when I attempted to install other
update patches involving the fact that IE is not recognized
when I attempt to use a password to get to MY MSN and also,
more importantly, my Hotmail account. Consequently, I can
only access my Hotmail via Netscape, and for the time being
use IE only when required at any web site. (I prefer if I
could use IE, and am waiting for XP SP2)

.... When I do use Netscape now, it runs only for "so long"
and then is blocked by something that requires me to shut
it down and reinitiate the program in order to receive ISP
mail or send mail.

.... Sometimes when I shut down Netscape, I get an error
report, such as the below list of files that I allow to be
sent to Netscape. There seems to be an integration problem
with legitimate programs on the hard disc, that are not MS
programs--and I believe this is part of Microsoft's ongoing
technical development establishing a secure OS on the
internet. It's important to allow the user/owner to have
an alternative browser, such as Netscape, in order to keep
alternatives when anything goes wrong with an MS program,
so I have continued to maintain and use Netscape for
certain features not available by other browsers including IE.

: Netscape Auto-Report of OS Error in Shutting Down
Netscape listed these files that are involved:
C:\DOCUME~1\Lenza\LOCALS~1\Temp\WERA5.tmp.dir00\Netscp.exe.mdmp
C:\DOCUME~1\Lenza\LOCALS~1\Temp\WERA5.tmp.dir00\appcompat.txt

Which patch did you download? If it was from the Windows Update site, then
it shouldn't matter what order you did it in, but if you installed a patch
from a "security bulletin" email from Microsoft, then you fell for a well
known hoax and installed a virus on to your system. MS do not EVER sent
users patches by email. The most you will ever get is a security update
pointing you to a download on MS's website, but then ONLY if you subscribe
to the relevant MS mailing lists.

XP is not under R&D for SP2. SP2 is under development for XP...

You can still download SP1(though it's actually SP1a now) from Microsofts
site... Try looking in the Catalog... Best to get the network install
(130+mb) instead of the smaller one as that one just downloads more as it
needs it and can take a LOOOONG time :)

You'll have a long wait... SP2 isn't due for at least a year...

There is nothing in XP which will stop other competitors products from
operating. You'll probably find Netscape is crashing simply because it's a
bug ridden load of tosh and it crashes on everyones PC...

It looks to me like you may have some kind of virus infection, do you have
up to date antivirus software? It could also possibly be some spyware that
has gotten on to your PC. I'd recommend you try AdAware and Spybot Search
& Destroy to get rid of it. Both are easily findable on the net...

If that all fails, then your best option is to backup your data and
reinstall windows from scratch. Then apply all critical updates from MS's
site, but try not to do more than 4 at a time, and test your PC operates
correctly after each batch of updates.
