MS Paint will not save images to GIF

Guys

I am stumped.....My MS Paint program (XP) has just decided it will no
allow me to save my images as a gif this is what happens.

error reads

paint cannot read this file this is not a valid bitmap file or it i
not currently supported.

hmmmmm anyone help? please

and no I do not want to use another program and no I do not have th
installation disk.
