It won't hurt to ask in both places, since no one seems to have a solution.

Right hand / Left hand situation.

Thanks for this wonderful thread; I thought I was alone in this problem.
This must be a 'Feature' of Vista. I had the same two POP3 accounts working
fine under Windows XP with Outlook 2002 and both passwords were remembered
just fine. With the same version of Outlook 2002 on Vista, the passwords are
conveniently forgotten every time the Outlook session is closed. It makes no
difference what group settings and options are tried. Even deleting the one
account did not help. I have a secure log in for the account, with no
interfering virus protection, and Vista just seems to clear the password from
memory. This is not the kind of security that new users to computers need as
it violates the basic KISS principle.

Windows Mail does remember the password so this is not that great a
'Feature'. I'm not sure that I want to upgrade to Outlook 2007 just to solve
this problem. Maybe I should check out the latest Apple?

I'm having the same problem as Prof AJ. I just purchased and installed
Office 2007 student/home edition.....which doesn't come with Outlook, so I'm
using my 2000 Outlook.

It is absolutely ridiculous that Outlook 2007 only comes with Office
Standard 2007. I purchased the student/home edition because it comes with
One Note. The only other edition that comes with One Note is Office
Ultimate, which does not come with Outlook, either. I am very disappointed.
The ONLY reason I purchased a new PC because I thought it was going to be too
expensive to purchase a Mac and then have to purchase Windows for Mac so that
I can use statistical software programs that I need for my work/school that
don't run on Mac's operating system. Next time I will purchase a Mac.

Here's what was on that website (it looks like I'm out of luck-I actually
have 2002):

Outlook 2002: It runs, but email account passwords are not saved. After you
enter the password during the first email check, Outlook will remember it
until you close down Outlook. This is because Outlook used the protected
storage interfaces to store passwords and these are no longer supported in
Vista. Unless Microsoft decides to create a publicly available hotfix to
address this, you won't be able to save passwords. Outlook 2002 is outside of
mainstream support so this is unlikely to happen as it's not a critical
security hole.

Note that when you enter the password, the Send and Receive that brought up
the password dialog may fail but future send and receives will work. Leave
Outlook open 24/7 to avoid entering it frequently.

Outlook 2000: Internet Mail Only (IMO) mode will fail due to the missing
wab.dll (Windows Address Book). Corporate/Workgroup mode seems to work fine,
except the Startup dialog comes up each time you restart Outlook (click Next
and work your way through the dialog), but with more extensive use,
additional issues may come to light. If you are using Outlook 2000 for email
because you need the calendar, it's probably well worth your time to try the
Mail and Calendar applications included with Vista. Windows Mail is more
secure than Outlook 2000 and includes anti-spam filtering. The Calendar
application supports many of the features found in Outlook 2007's calendar,
including calendar sharing and publishing.

Hi guys,

I tried follwoing the posts about Outlook XP (2002) not remembering
passwords for email accounts after installing it under the Vista OS. From
what I have read it seems that the "solution" is to upgrade Office to a later
version. Does anyone have anything specific that will work for this problem?

The first time this happened to me I tried useing Windows Mail provided with
Vista. It gave an immediate error message when propmted to send/receive
messages. There were no errors listed in the details, however Windows Mail
would not query my email server period.

I attempted to recover by restoring Vista to the last restore point prior to
installing OfficeXP (2002). Vista locked up during the restore process and I
had to reinstall Vista. Lost a lot of data on my hard drive as a result.

Frustration sets in here and and would really love to find the solution to
this one.

Thanks,

Glenn

I went through all this and took away the reg entry. But still no
luck...

Sorry, that's normal operation for Outlook XP in Vista. It's been
reported before and there isn't a fix. The work around is to enter all
your info, check email and then leave Outlook open as long as the
computer is turned on, once you close Outlook you'll have to reenter
all the info again next time you open it.

Office XP and earlier are not supported in Vista, only Office 2003 and
Office 2007 are supported, so don't expect a fix, you'll have to live
with it or upgrade.

I know that's not what you wanted to hear, it got me, too, and I had to
go to Office 2003.
