MS Outlook Hidden email addresses

When generating an email I begin to enter an address [auto fill turned-on] and ‘very old’ address come-up with the letters of the name being entered.

These address were supposed to be deleted ages ago.

Not only do the ones in my Contact Address Book show, but former addresses, and even fax numbers. This is really disconcerting and naturally has resulted in sending an email to the ‘wrong’ person and/or an old or not preferred address.

I’ve searched the address book with the ‘find’ command, part or all of the name or email address and those old address are not there.

I even got desperate with one address and searched the Register knowing that would be fruitless.

In the past I've used to use both the Contact Address Book and the Personal AB but deleted the Personal Address Books, I think.

If I click on the address in the email, then check ‘Properties’ the undesired address is shown. Of course there is no place to 'delete' this address. So I even tried changing the properties to ZZZ for the name and (e-mail address removed) for the email address but it’s not saved to be ignored or deleted.

So, Where are those obnoxious old address hidden and how to delete.
Secondly, how can I turn off the fax numbers popping up w/o just eliminating them in the address book?

You didn't even bother to mention your Outlook version. Moreover, you are
confusing two separate Outlook functions: autocompletion and autoresolution.
There is no such thing as an "auto-fill" option so it is rather hard to
reply to your question or know what feature you think you turned on. Help
files and the KB are replete with information on these two features.

If you don't know the difference between autoresolution and autocompletion,
at the very least provide more accurate details as to how you are entering
email addresses so we can figure out for you which you are using. Also
explain why you thought "these addresses were supposed to be deleted ages
ago."

Fax numbers are electronic addresses so of course they appear in the Outlook
Address Book. Always have.

Russ - hate to sound like an idiot but 1st time I've asked for help and frankly I probably don’t know the ‘proper terms’ but I’ll try one more time.

• Version – MS OL 2002 910.6515.6626] SP3 [I trust this is what you want}
• Example of problem step by step
o Start a NEW email
o In address line enter ‘Hill’ and two address pop up
 The top on is correct and from my Contacts file
 The lower one is OLD – if I enter and right click and ask for ‘lookup contact’ I get ‘no email address’ response; if I right click on ‘properties’ the display has the name but the email address is OLD. This is the one I can not figure out how to get rid of.
• This issue with fax numbers is just one I guess I have to live with and be careful not to have it entered in the address line.

I’m sure the Help and KB are as you say ‘replete with information’ but I just haven’t touched the right area I guess. So, how do I find that darn old address and get rid of it. Have a number of instances like that and it’s truly frustration.

That makes it much easier. You simply have an outdated entry in your
autocompletion cache. Remove individual addresses from the autocompletion
cache by highlighting the entry when presented in the suggested names list
(use your arrow key to migrate to the entry) and then hitting your Delete
key before you tab out of the field. To clear the entire cache, follow the
instructions here:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q287623

The standard behavior for the Outlook Address book is to display all
electronic addresses (both fax and e-mail). That behavior cannot be changed.
The only way to prevent the display of fax numbers is to store them in a
different field or to disguise them (e.g., precede them with an alpha
character) so that Outlook won't recognize them as phone numbers.
There are also a number of utilities available that can do this for you
automatically. Some are listed here:

Russ -

Well, you have one very satisfied customer - got rid of a couple with the 'delete' but doesn't work when it is a singe address - so renamed the cache and will go from there.

Thanks loads for your assistance for this old foggie!!
