MS .NET Framework SP1 Updates Fail Install

OK, I have tried several times but the following update download but
*always* fail to install.

Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0 Service Pack 1 (KB929300)
Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 1 (KB110806)

Both now say they are downloaded and ready to install.

Questions:

1) I want to delete the downloaded updates. Where are they, how to I
delete them and the entry saying they are downloaded.

2) Any idea why this problem?

Note; I do have these version of .NET installed, the above updates are
not listed in Add/Remove (were not installed after all).

I know how to manually download the updates via. MS Security Bulletin
Search, so I can get them that way.

Sorry if this has been asked before, but I don't have time to search
now.

When you call up the updates, the radio button for 'custom' leads to a
checkbox to 'don't ask again'

Thanks, but I know that.

You don't say how to delete the already downloaded update files nor where
they are located.

OPPS - forgot, went to MS Downloads and other sites and cannot find the
downloads for these files anyway.

The problem is often attributed to anti-virus software corrupting the
runtime modules and the update installations . Please read this article :
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923100 . Unfortunately you may have to
uninstall both .Net Framework 2.0 and 3.0, reinstall them again manually,
and then try reinstalling the security updates again. Only this time, please
ensure that your AV program is off during reinstallation and restart Windows
XP as required. You can go to the MS update website to download the .Net
Framework 2.0 and 3.0 runtime. If you need .Net Framework 3.5 from November
here is the link :

Allan, thanks very much.

I just downloaded all the installs linked in the KBs and your answer.
They're now on CD. (Framework 1.1, 1.2, 2.0, 3.0, 3.5)

But I am having no problems on my home WinXP (other than the Update install)
and don't seem to need Framework updates. So I've decided to just hide these
updates that don't install.... for now. (I have them on the CD)

But I would like to delete the "already downloaded" install files and
whatever entry is telling Win Updates that I have the files.

Can you tell me how to do these 2 things?

You could go to MS update and hide the updates from being offered to you.
Then you could try to install the failing updates once more. If the update
fails I don't think you will see the notifications any more. A good way to
find out if you really need the security update is to run the Belarc Advisor
: http://www.belarc.com . It will show you any missing security updates that
should be installed on your system.

Allen, small nit-pick. You didn't answer my question.

The updates are *already* downloaded by Win Update. They are
somewhere on my drive. I want to delete the *already* downloaded
files.

My question is where are these files?

I search for by description, KB#, etc. and the files do not seem to be
identified in a logical manner.

Also, is there a log or Registry entry saying I have these files
(ready for install)?

I did try to install via Win Update with NAV Auto-Protect off, failed.

As for Belarc, I use it and the missing NET updates are listed as
missing even though they are *optional* in Win Update.

My thought is, since I have no problems with my system AND the NET
updates are optional, I don't need them. Especially if installing
them is so flaky. MS & Symantec (aka Norton) should get together and
implement a fix so NAV does not interfere with NET installs.

I don't know where the temp files for WU are stored but you could try
posting in microsoft.public.windowsupdate NG for more specialized advice.
I am disappointed to hear that you are still having problems installing the
updates that Belarc says you should install. As long as Norton Auto-protect
was disabled during all your reinstallations of .NET framework 1-3.5 I don't
think that it would cause any problem. If it corrupted the runtimes you
could have problems installing updates later on.
One more thing that you could check is that your version of Windows
Installer is current. You can check that your version of Windows Installer
is 3.1.4000.4039 by
typing at the Start menu Run "%systemroot%\system32" and then select the
file "msi.dll" . Under File|"properties" for this file you can see the
version number. In case it is not 3.1.4000.4039, then first install security
update KB927891 : http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927891 . Then try
reinstalling again.
Another method that some people have used is to run the Windows Installer
Cleanup tool to remove the entries for .NET Framework 2.0 and 3.0 before
uninstalling and reinstalling those two runtime modules. It is available on
the MS Windows website for download.

Allan,

My apologies. The KB article you sighted earlier did work, sorta'.

Since Add/Remove for Framework 2.0 & 1.1 failed, I use the manual
"eraser" method. Removed the entries in Add/Remove list, use MS
Installer Cleanup to remove the entries there, then deleted all files
in the ...\Framework folder, finally ran my Registry cleanup utility
to remove all Framework references. Rebooted & installed 2.0 (which
installs 1.1) and 3.0 (both the SP1 versions) and all went well. Both
Framework installations completed correctly.

Again, thanks for the pointers, really.

But MS really needs to fix the Framework install problem, this should
never happen, never.
