MS Messenger not the service

I have Win XP Home SP2. I have Windows MS messenger completely uninstalled,
ie, it doesn't show in "add/remove programs". I've also tweaked some other
areas 2-3 years ago after first getting XP.

All of a sudden, in the past 3 weeks, messenger is poping up asking to
signin. Never have. I've checked the options and absolutely nothing is
checked so it should not be running.

Only change in my system lately has been a change from dial-up to Bellsouth
DSL and a change to start using Hotmail.com for most email stuff.

Is Hotmail somehow connected with this problem?
Any other things I should look for?

Thanks,
Ed

I *hate* Windows Messenger -- it's ingrained into the OS, so it's hard to
get rid of. If you're sure you're not using it and you never will, there is
a way to get rid of it permanently, but it involves modifying the registry --
if you're not comfortable doing this you might want to enlist the help of
someone who is.

What you should do is start the registry editor and search for all
references to "msmsgs.exe". Delete all the parent keys (i.e. not just the
key that contains the string, but the container, if applicable) that contain
that string. After you've done that, reboot the machine and delete the
C:\Program Files\Messenger folder. I do this on every new machine I build,
almost completely out of spite for the stupid thing.

The Messenger chat program can be easily controlled by the options (Do not
automatically start up and Do NOT run in the background. The disk space used
is too little to worry about and since it is ingrained (for specific
reasons) it isn't worth the frustration or effort to delete it.

MSN Messenger is now the chat of choice if you want a full range of
functions and use hotmail. (actually, Messenger and MSN Messenger can
co-exist with no problem and under certain conditions need to co-exist.)

Outlook Express may use Messenger's data (to list items in a pain)but does
not start it up or logon if the options are changed. If you use Outlook for
e-mail and Outlook Express for you News Reader, the Messenger list is not
shown even if you start Messenger.

Messenger is a harmless chat program that is often confused with the
Messenger service and System notification chat window Alerter.
These should be turned off and disabled.

For most users worrying about Messenger is just a matter of downloading MSN
Messenger 6.2 and then stopping Messenger 4.7 from staring and running in
the back ground. (But it is still available to use if needed.)

I too have never understood why these moron programmers decide to make annoying
programs like Messenger uninstallable.

Go to this link:

http://www.dougknox.com/xp/tips/xp_messenger_remove.htm

This is a Visual Basic Script file which will remove Windows® Messenger from
Windows® XP. It will also adjust your System Registry to prevent a long delay
when opening Outlook Express when Windows Messenger is removed or disabled.

This is the ONLY method I have found that really works and totally eliminates
this stupid program.

Messenger does not appear in Add/Remove. See www.dougknox.com, click
the XP Fixes, and right column, Windows Messenger Disable/Remove

Ed, I too have been having the same issue as you have. I did the uninstall
as bob instructed but XP reinstalled it automatically. I did this it seems
to work so maybe it will also help you. I opened the program by going to
Program Files / Messenger / Window Messenager. I selected tools and
options. Made sure that the General Tab make sure that Automic Run
Messenger, Allow Automatic Sign in are unchecked. in the Connection tab Click
change from .NetPassport to communication.

I have been running it this way for a couple of weeks now since I XP
reinstalled the 4.7 messenger on my computer. I haven't had an XP update yet
so I suppose I can not say for sure this will resolve the issue but its worth
a try and you dont have to uninstall something that XP requires.

Who knows maybe the programs at MS will finally take care of this issue on
the next update.

Joey.
