MS Management console

T

Tracy

Hi All,

I am unable to defrag the HD:
1. When click Disk Defragmenter, nothing opens and HD
seems to be running but hangs for a long time. A message
sometimes would pop up saying MS Management console is
not working.
2. when typed "mmc.exe" in Run, computer would hang and
after a long period of time MMC opened, nothing in the
console tree.
3. One more thing seems to relate to MMC is Dead Aim's
saved message files, when tried to open the file,
computer would hang for a long time too.
4. Other than that everything else seems to be working
fine at this point.

Computer spec:
Pentium 3 notebook, 1.2 Ghz, 256MB RAM, 14GB HD space
left in C, running WinXP home edition with service pack 1
intalled, all critical updates installed as of 12/31/03
as well.

Problem started after computer was infected by tons of
spywares, but they have been cleared out of the system.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Tracy;
1) Don't know.

2) If I type mmc or mmc.exe in Run, I get an empty Console Root also.
Try this:
Start | Settings | Control Panel | Administrative Tools | Is there a Console1.msc??
If not | Start | Run | mmc | OK
File | Add/Remove Snap-in | Add button | Highlight | Add | Close | OK

3) I don't see how DeadAim is in any way related to MMC.

4) Good.

2. is normal as far as mmc being empty when opened this way

What related messages, if any, are in the event log ?
What is the memory usage at the time when you try
to start 1 or 2 ?

On 3 I will punt.

Sorry, got busy and didn't check for reply.

There wasn't any other message other than the
occassionally "MMC is not working" would pop up after the
HD runs for a long time. Once I was able to check the
memory ussage it was between 0% to 2%.

BTW, when clicked disk defragmenter, no window opened, HD
just ran forever until I turned the power off. In the
meantime, opening programs took a very long time, if any
would ever open.

Should I pop in the recover cd or WinXP cd to reload?
Perhaps it might fix the problem?

Sorry again for taking this long to read your replies.
Thanks for your help.

Tracy;
Sorry, I got busy also.
Try this:
Start | Run | Type: eventvwr | OK

This will open the Event Viewer. Have a look around, especially
in Application and System and see if you can find anything related to
your errors/problems

Also make sure to update your Anti Virus software and run a
complete Virus scan.
