MS Internet Explorer Won't Exit

Periodically my interenet explorer will not exit when I
hit the red X in the upper right hand corner.
Additionally when I go to File Close or File Exit it
likewise does not respond. However, I am able to surf
websites in this mode- it just won't shut down.

At this time my only solution has been to Ctrl-Alt-Del
and shut down the program through the task manager. This
of course is a bit of a pain and typically does not save
the settings on exit. Hence, if I have added any
bookmarks during the session they are lost.

I have check with MS to see if I am using the most recent
version and I am.

Any other suggestions?

What does a scan with a current antivirus program (meaning a version not
earlier than 2002 and using updated virus definitions) show? Also,
remove spyware with Spybot Search & Destroy from www.security.kolla.de
and Ad-aware from www.lavasoftusa.com. Be sure to update these programs
before running them. It is best to run antivirus and spyware removal
tools in Safe Mode.

After you know your computer is virus and spyware-free, if the problem
persists, please post back. Be sure to include details about your
Internet connection (method and ISP) and what you've already done to
troubleshoot.

Ricardo,

It may be due to malware BHOs. BHO [ Browser Helper Objects ] load with both iexplore and explorer instances. You may try disabling the BHOs one-by-one using ToolbarCop. If disabling a BHO solves the problem, delete the BHO and run Ad-Aware scan.

Using ToolbarCop to remove the unwanted Toolband, Toolbar Icons and BHO:

Hi,

Thanks for the advice. I have one question- you referred
to "safe mode" I am not familiar with that term. I
presume it is some type of setting that would allow me to
reset the original options should something get messed
up. How do I engage "safe mode".

Thank you,
Ricardo

Safe Mode is a diagnostic mode in which most of the drivers and programs
that run in regular mode are not loaded. Although some particularly
nasty spyware and viruses will run in Safe Mode, most do not and since
you can't delete files in use, that is where you can best delete the
bad stuff. To get to Safe Mode, restart the computer and as it is
starting up, repeatedly tap F8. This will get you to the menu where you
can choose Safe Mode. Choose the one without networking. The reason for
repeatedly tapping the key is that many computers are a bit fussy about
when you hit F8 - it's some time between when POST finishes and Windows
starts and is often hard to hit just right.

Cheers,

Malke
