The Add/Remove files listed in the Control Panel have lots
of MS Hotfixes (over 20) which I aparently downloaded over
a period of time. Can these be removed without affecting
anything?

Those are the updates that have been installed.
Removing them will remove the updates.

Just leave them as they are.

"Hotfixes" are the updates you installed from the Windows Update
website. Do not be tempted to remove them or you will uninstall
the actual updates.

If you wish to safely remove the "uninstall files" for the
Hotfixes (i.e. $NtUninstallQxxxxxx$ files shown in Windows Explorer)
and cleanup your Add/Remove Programs list, visit MS-MVP Doug Knox's
excellent website for instructions.

Remove Hotfix Backup files and the Add/Remove Programs Registry entries
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/utils/xp_hotfix_backup.htm

Note: Doug's program only removes the uninstall files and Hotfix entries
in the Add/Remove Programs listing. It does not remove the
actual updates.

.
sure and then go in to c windows and delete the system32
directory,no reason to have xp system files either.

Their are several FREE programs that will remove entrees
in the add/remove list (they do not uninstall your
programs just remove the listing) this helps with the
clutter and can be easlisy undone. check out
www.webattack.com under freeware or

Those are there so you could *uninstall* the patches. Each corresponds
to a folder of files needed for the purpose -
Windows Hotfix Qnnnnnn or KBnnnnnn relates to the folder
Windows\$NTUninstallQnnnnnn$ for the fix described at
http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;nnnnnn

If you decide you will not want to uninstall a fix (and if all is
running smoothly you probably won't) then delete the folder. If you
then try in Add/remove, to Remove that one, it will fail, and you will
be offered the option of removing the entry there
