I would like to shut off MS Firewall because I have a conflict between Norton
and MS. I went into Control Panel, Security Center click on Windows Firewall
then OFF and for some reason the Firewall stays on.

Hi,

Start/run services.msc, scroll down to the windows firewall service and
double-click it. "Stop" the service and set the startup type to disabled.
Click apply/ok.

Can you go to the Security Center in Control Panel after turning the
Firewall off and click on Recommendations and tick the box that says I have
a Firewall I will monitor myself.

Hey Rick, Stop by and say hello to the 98 general newsgroup sometime. Garry
Terhune and PCR are still there and we are doing well. I now have a
dual-boot 98SE and XP Pro. computer for the best of both worlds in terms of
backwards-compatibility and the ability to run modern software through XP so
I frequent both newsgroups now. <smile>

Hey Dan,

Only so many minutes in a day.....just not enough time. Besides, PCR can
handle it, can't he? <g>

Lucky you <g>....PCR came along after you had migrated to the dark side - he
quickly became quite a regular in W98.gen_disc with excessively long posts
consisting of multiple pastes of everything he ever read on the subject at
hand (much of which was written by MVP's like you and I, and he does give
credit where due). He means well, and is definitely *not* malicious, but he
often offers too much information for a simple fix. Think a cross between
Carey Holzman's "24 steps to fix networking problems" and Henri Lebeouf's "I
think I have a link to that KB article somewhere on one of my pages", all
done with every intention of trying to help.....

:> I was joking about his long lists of web-links a few days ago to PCR and
thinking how the average home computer user would get overwhelmed by them.

Ah, ha, ha! Better go tell him "yes", Dan, or he'll take me out of his
will as designee for his Moniker!

Thanks or Good Luck,
There may be humor in this post, and,
Naturally, you will not sue,
should things get worse after this,

Yes, I remember Bicycle Rob - a real "flash in the pan". Posted everywhere
for awhile, then gone with not a hint of why. A friend and former coworker
of Jim E's, IIRC.

That was before I ever checked out the newsgroup. There used to be an
ArtWilder but I have not seem him in the newsgroup recently. He really
liked Windows 98SE and posted about how it was better than XP and the
vulnerabilities of XP.
