Have a Win2K box that sends faxes via Outlook. The fax goes through just
fine, but in the process, the DSL connection is dropped and the machine that
shares the connection need to be rebooted.

This issue does not occur when using WinFax.

Is there an easy way to resolve the issue but continue to use MS fax?

TIA

Are you connecting the modem to the DSL line through a line filter?

Yes I am.

Small network with 3-4 machines, some laptops, all with modems (not
winmodems) sharing a single phone line.

One machine is set up to share the internet connection, and the dsl modem
(internal) is fed from a filter. If you try to send a fax from any of the
other machines, the fax goes through, however the DSL connection is lost at
the host machine - which then has to reboot to restore the DSL connection.
The issue only came up when we started using MS fax. WinFax 10 works fine
with no issues.

Well, about the only thing I can add is that WinFax has a very nasty habit
of damaging/destroying Windows XP Fax, so this might be a symptom. Do you
have and/or have you tried a machine with just XP Fax and no WinFax? Also,
have you considered replacing the "machine set up to share the internet
connection" with a broadband router along the lines of:

Linksys 5-Port Ethernet Switch

These installs have no Symantec products installed - the fresh installs were
to eliminate Symantec products - there were, however no issues with WinFax
and DSL in the previous configuration.

Do you have something to add to resolving the issue as configured - or are
you suggesting that the internet sharing option inWin2K is defective or
unsupported?

This net uses Outlook for email and fax.

I have nothing to add on the issue as configured. I suggested the router to
eliminate any possible contention between Internet Connection Sharing and
the Fax service; there shouldn't be any contention but there appears to be.
I would be very interested to see if the Fax service has the some effect on
a router.
