MS-DOS error: Program too big to fit in memory

S

Sniff

When I try to open practicaly ANY program, the black MS-
DOS window open and in a blink before its close I can
see:program too big to fit memory. No program will start.
I havent changed ANY settings recently. I tryed to fix it
by maxing the parameters in Properties of programs, and of
cmd.exe. Nothings work.

I deinstalled Windows XP, reinstalled it, its the same.
Its the first time this ever happen to me...

Anybody know on what MS-DOS actually rely on? If I format
my computer, will it be fixed?

You may need to tweak the settings in one of two files:

AUTOEXEC.NT
CONFIG.NT

These are usually found in the C:\windows\system32 folder.

They are roughly equivalent to the old AUOTEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS files used
under 95, 98, ME.

However, be aware that the XP command prompt is not really DOS. It only
looks like DOS. Therefore, some older DOS programs may never run in such a
window.

XP does provide for some backward compatibility by allowing each executable
to be assigned a compatibility mode. In windows explorer, find the EXE file
for the program you are trying to run and right-click, properties,
compatibility. Try the windows 95 mode.
