MS-DOS Error in Windows XP:" Not ready reading drive E"

I am currently using Microsoft Windows XP Professional version 2002 SP3. I
also have both the old DOS FoxPro/LAN 1.08 and Visual FoxPro 6.0 software
installed on my system. I encountered the following error at the Command
prompt while trying to run an old DOS program, irrespective of the storage
media where the program is located, e.g. hard disk, floppy or flash disk:

C:\WINNT\system32\cmd.exe

Not ready reading drive E
Abort, Retry or Fail?

But this same program runs perfectly under Windows Vista on another machine.
It had also been running fine on earlier versions of Windows on other
machines.

I have tried to run this program in compatibility mode for all earlier
Windows versions on my machine but in vain. I formerly had Windows 2000
installed on my machine before upgrading to XP.

I would be most grateful if a solution could be found to this issue, please.

Thank you.
