Running Dos based program in Win XP Pro with NTFS

I am having a problem running certain DOS Programs Full Screen using Microsoft XP Professional with NTFS. The software offers a Command Mode which creates a DOS-like environment from which DOS-like commands may be entered and true DOS programs may be executed. A Command mode window is created by running c:\windows\system32\cmd.exe. When this is done through a short-cut icon one is also able to specify Full Screen operation instead of a window operation. The problem is that in Full Screen operation, the system crashes when certain DOS programs are run such as Edit and FoxProx. Edit is the DOS file editor that comes with the XP software. FoxProx is the executable file that I wish to run in order to operate a DOS FoxPro program that for best performance needs to be run Full Screen

The FoxProx program runs fine in a window but 'freezes' or 'crashes' in full screen as described above

Any help would be appreciated.

Have you tried the Compatibility settings (under the Properties for the
shortcut)? Sometimes they help, sometimes not.

Sounds like you are trying to use a really old version of FoxPro (i.e., a
true-DOS based version). Programs that demand exclusive use of system
resources often will fail when running under an operating systems that does
not permit exclusive use, like any NT-based version of Windows. Some old
DOS-mode games cannot be made to run under NT-based Windows.

I'm not familiar with MSDE (Microsoft SQL Database Engine). It's a free
download and maybe that will suffice as a database server. MySQL is free
(for non-profit use) and now has GUI tools.

Don't know why you are having problems when running edit.exe. No problems
on my system. Do you have a dual- or multiboot configuration and perhaps
are trying to use edit.exe from a Windows 9x/ME install instead of the
version of that program developed for Windows NT?

Thanks Vanguard. I don't know if the version of FoxPro is old or not. It's a database program that is used by the Toaist Tai Chi club I am one of the Treasurers for. I expect it is old

No I do not have a dual or multiboot configuration. I only have Windows XP Pro operating system installed.

Maybe it just isn't going to work in full screen. I do have a work around, I've enlarged the window and if I change my screen resolution to 800x600 I get the program running in about three quarters of the screen. I can use it in that fashion. However, I know that someone in Ottawa has this Foxprox program running in full screen on Windows XP Home Edition, so I thought it would work in XP Pro.

Thanks again. Elcamp
