MS Antispyware question

Kevin

Im a little frustrated over here as I am sure most are
when they need to post. I have spent half a day on this
possible non-problem.

I decided to run MS Antispyware which found a trojan
called magiccontrol aka, Dialer B, Trojan.Win32.Simcss,
Downloader-DA.b etc. Spybot did not find this previously
nor did my Norton Antivirus. I downloaded Panda
whichidentified and supposedly eliminated the problem. MS
Antispyware keeps giving me a positive reading whether I
Remove it or Quarantine it. Safemode hasnt had any effect
and it doesnt show up on additional Panda sweeps. I
switched from Zone Alarm to the Panda Firewall which came
with the trial package.

Any help appreciated.

I have had a chance to read some of the other posts and I
have seen that others have had somewhat similar problems.
I run Windows 2000 to answer any backup replies and the
infected file is in WINNT/TRIM if that means anything. I
do not know if this is a necessary registry file. I am
currently downloading a couple of additional antispyware
programs to see if this is just a glitch in MS
Antispyware. For the sake of argument, lets say I am
unable to get a non-regeneration in an MS Antispyware
scan. I feel I have wasted my day but...I have learned a
few things so I guess that is not the case.

Thank you very much.

I can't tell from here-can you give full details of the precise item and
location that Microsoft Antispyware is detecting and not removing?

In general, as Andre mentions--if Microsoft Antispyware correctly identifies
something but doesn't, (in fact,) remove it--doing the detection and
cleaning in safe mode can help a lot.

Another way to get a third-party opinion would be to try Trend Micro's
online scanner:

I like this one because it includes spyware in its detection and cleaning.

One other thing to mention. Firewalls, in general, don't stop spyware or
trojan installs if you still click on things at web sites. So the firewall
is a Good Thing, you need it, but don't depend on it to stop spyware. The
active protections in Microsoft Antispyware are more likely to alert you
that the cutesy "enter here" button that you just clicked on, in fact, is
attempting to install software on your machine. Or, the freebie game that
you just downloaded, is now bringing in a raft of other unwanted code along
with it that you hadn't bargained for.
