Problem after removing virus with MS Antispyware

Hello,
I'd be grateful for your help please. I installed and ran MS Antispyware on
my pc yesterday. It found some adware but also a Trojan identified as
Unclassified.ActiveX.Trojan.A Hostile ActiveX Control
in file C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\Information_s.INF

I erased the virus using the programme and it gave me a report of scan
history as follows:

On rebooting my pc this morning it would not load windows normally. A screen
comes up asking if I want normal boot, hard drive boote etc. After trying
normal boot, the hard-drive emits a high pitched whine and loading stalls.
After trying hard drive loading windows loads very slowly, but the Antivirus
part of Norton Internet Security is disabled and will not turn on. I tried to
use system restore to go back to before I installed the antispyware but on
reboot the same thing happens on reboot and then the system reports that the
restore failed.

At the moment I have booted from the hard drive and can use Internet
Explorer and most of my pc. Norton Internet Security will load, but not the
antivirus section. Would you please advise how I might restore my pc to
normal and/or how I might be able to use system restore to go back to before
I installed the antispyware prog and then I could do a full system scan with
norton anticirus which should pick up the Trojan.

Thanking you in advance for your help,
Best regards from Ireland
Helen

I wonder why you installed a beta product (MS Antispyware) that has
already been superseded by a new product (Windows Defender).

What I would try first in your situation is update MSAS to MSWD and see
if this resolved the problem.

Hi Pat,
Thanks for your advice. I didn't know that the antispyware had been
superseded by windows defender, I will try installing that (although it
appeasrs to be a beta 2 also).

In the meantime I have managed to get my Norton antivirus to work in safe
mode and have been able to clear the virus which the antispyware tried to
remove unsuccesfully. Once the virus was cleared I was able to use system
restore to rollback my system to before I installed the antispyware. It
appears that the virus files were blocking windows restore from working.

Thanks again for your help,
Best regards, Helen
