mpeg files with no sound

I have a new HP Elitebook 8530 notebook. With XP and it told me I didnt have
the codecs for mpeg files. I cant believe that but... I downloaded the codecs
so... some of my mpeg files have no sound. any ideas?

Try this tool.

"GSpot Codec Information Appliance v2.70a"

It first loads all the available CODECs (whatever came with WinXP plus whatever
has been added). And then, when you drop a file on the open window, it attempts
to build a graph for the file. And that may give you some idea what CODEC it is
using or what CODEC it needs.

You click the numbers near the bottom, in an attempt to get things
to render.

It doesn't go out on the Internet or anything, and shop for CODECs for you.
But it is better than nothing, when you can't play a file.

Be careful with downloading codecs! Lots of so called "codecs" are really
malware.

Even downloading legitimate codecs can cause problems with media player that
are rather hard to diagnose and repair. Tread carefully with codecs.
