Mpeg Layer 3 for Sound Recorder?

Mike950

I use Windows Sound Recorder to add short messages to my email and on my old
machine one of the compression options was MPEG Layer-3. I do not have that
option on my new computer so I downloaded and ran l3codecx.exe. The
Fraunhofer MPEG Layer-3 Audio Decoder, but it still does not show up as an
option in Sound Recorder. Can someone what I have to do to get this to work.
Thanks.

PS: Where does the l3codecx.exe install to? Can I get the needed file from
my old computer and put it on my new computer?

1. Open Sound Recorder

2. Click "File"

3. Click "Save as..."

4. At the bottom of the Save as window, it shows the format being
saved...click the "Change" button there. Can you select MPEG layer-3 as a
format?

Thanks for trying to help dadiOH but I think you missed my point. My old
computer has Mpeg Layer 3 as one of the available options. My new computer
does not. I'm trying to find out how I can get it, install it and get it to
appear as an option in Sound Recorder. I was also wondering if I could just
copy it from my old computer but I don't know where it resides or what it's
called (filename).

You said you had installed a Fraunhofer ACM codec. Having done so, you
should be able to select MP3 in Sound Recorder as a "save as" option as I
outlined...did you look? If you can't, does the codec appear in the list of
audio codecs in Control Panel, Sounds and Audio Devices, Hardware tab, Audio
Codecs, Properties, Properties?

With XP, windows/system32/l3codeca.acm or l3codecp.acm depending on what you
installed. Could be both, l3codecp.acm is the better of the two. Sticking
it there makes it available to any program that wants to use it; that
doesn't mean a particular program *will* use it, merely that it can.
