Mpeg 2 file problem with ppt 2003

I've been reading a number of issues concerning mpg files in powerpoint
presentations. I too am having a problem inserting short mpg 2 files into
ppt 2003. I've read the Austin Powers tutorial however it doesn't address
my particular issue as near as I can tell. My system is a brand new Sony
VAIO multimedia computer model VGC-RA700 with 512 RAM and two hard drives.
As near as I can tell, it has all current OS updates and media updates. It
has installed on it a few DVD applications, Adobe Premiere for video
editing, and some proprietary Sony software for multimedia (audio and video
editing and DVD playback.) I recently installed Office 97 and an upgrade to
Office 2003. I have not yet successfully been able to insert an mpg 2 file
created with Adobe Premiere or one compressed using compression software
from my Mac.

I can play these files using the MCI player (mplayer2.exe). When I attempt
to insert them into ppt, I get one of the following depending on the precise
file extension used: error message saying ppt can't run this file, a black
screen with no video playback when selected, complete lockup of ppt
necessitating a forced quit of the application. Each file which I attempt
to insert will play back using the MCI player.

BTW, I have tried using the avi codec in Adobe premiere. The resultant file
does play in ppt 2003. However, the quality is inferior to an mpeg 2 file
of similar dimension (720X480). It also appears that the frame rate is
similar if not the same.

I've checked the MCI extensions folder and MCI folder (windows XP home
edition) and have found in the extensions file that two lines are missing:
ivf REG_SZ MPEGVIDEO2 and wmp REG_SZ MPEGVIDEO2. In the MCI folder
the following was missing: MPEGVIDEO REG_SZ mciqtz32.dll

Again, since the mpeg 2 files in question playback on the MCI player, I have
assumed I have the necessary codecs and drivers installed. From what I have
read these files should play in ppt 2003. Others play similar formatted
files under win xp using office 2003. Can someone recommend some tests I
could perform which could lead to a solution for this problem?

Thanks for all suggestions in advance.
