Does windows (XP) come with some sort of software that will allow me to
copy a band from a CD into an MP3 format file? Where is it? What is it
called?

AFAIK the Windows Media Player will only rip .wmv files. May I suggest that if
you're planning on D/Ling to a new mp3 player, most of the current ones will
also play .wmv files. And apparently audio compression is one thing MS has
done very well. I have been listening on my player to wmvs compressed twice as
much(64kbps) as std. mp3s(128 kbps) and can hear little if any difference
and...an average CD takes about 30MB. Of course, if you're going to play them
on high-end audio components your results may differ, but for an mp3 player,
give it a shot. FYI you set the compression at Tools>Options>Copy Music Tab.

Cheers,
John

Windows Media Player 9. It is available thru WindowsUpdate, if you have not
done this update yet.

WMP9 does not rip to mp3 "out of the box" but, upon further surfing I find that
there are several plugins available, for less than US$20 that will add mp3
ripping capability to WMP9(click the "find out more about mp3s link" on the
Tools>Options>Copy Music tab). I do, however, stand by my previous statement
that you should take a listen to wmvs at 64kbps and see what you think.

If you have MS Plus it will add MP3 ripping to WMP9, but only at 56k. I
agree though, if you can use the wmv format I go with that instead.
