Your friend is correct. No driver CD is needed. If you've plugged it into
a working USB port with the correct cable, you should see it appear in the
drive list automatically - unless there is a drive already mapped to the
letter Windows assigns.

It is possible for Windows to ignore mappings and re-assign a drive letter
that's already assigned, and in that case, you won't see the drive in My
Computer - just the mapped one.

To check for that, right-click on My Computer and choose Manage. There,
click on Disk Management under Storage. Here, you'll see the physical
drives attached, regardless of the letters assigned. You will see the MP3
player here- If you've plugged the player in properly, and you are sure that
that port you've plugged it into works, and that it has working batteries,
*and* that it's turned on. If it's off, it will not appear.

If you do see it, right-click on the name of the drive in the right-hand
pane, and choose Change Drive Letter or Paths, then select a letter you
*know* is unused. You will then be able to see it in My Computer.
