MP3 player problem

Hi.

I don't know if this is a computer problem or a problem with the mp3
player. I have a coby MPC582 player that is just a couple of months
old. All was fine with it until a couple of days ago when I plugged
it into the computer to remove things and nothing happened. It seems
like the computer doesn't know it's there anymore. Media player says
to connect a device as well. I went to the Coby website and their
drivers say "Windows 98" and I have XP. Any ideas? It's really
aggravating.

Check your event logs - see whether you have anything funky in device
manager - and, if possible, try this on another computer (a friend's?) and
see if it works there.

How do I find the things you mentioned?

Event viewer - I go to start | run, and type
eventvwr <enter>

Device manager - control panel | system | hardware | device manager

I probably can't help you further with this if you aren't sure what to do
next - might be time to have a geeky friend come over to help you out.

Well, what I did was just restart the computer with the player still
plugged in and that seemed to do the trick. However, the player has
been acting a little weird like shutting off for no reason. Today, I
actually felt tiny shocks in my ears when the player shut down.
Strange. Anyway, thanks for your efforts. I appreciate it.

You're welcome - sounds like the little guy might be going bad. For what
it's worth, I eventually gave up on my lower-end MP3 player and got an iPod,
after years of not wanting to be a lemming. :)
