MP3 Converter Required

I am burning some songs, and they will not play on anything but my CDRW.
I use Nero, and when I checked their Help, I discovered that I need a
program to convert the MP3's to Audio; they supplied a link to their
website. The ba$tards want me to pay for the converter, so to heck with
them. Are there any free converters around?

Exact Audio Copy will rip and convert. In addition, you may find more
nice tools here: http://www.mp3-converter.com/exact_audio_copy.htm

If you are taking mp3s and making audio cds from them Nero does that for
free and it's automatic. It doesn't convert from cd to mp3 for free. If
the latter is what you want there are many free programs:

Here are a few good ones:

cdex http://www.cdex.n3.net/

eac http://www.exactaudiocopy.de/

This gets my vote. I've converted dozens of my cds with this little gem
and them burned them with Nero or played them on my MPIO FY200.
It's a great all-inclusive program that offers nearly everything you
need in one place (much like Irfan). I have used it exclusively and
extensively for almost a year now.

And it's free!

still, for perfect quality mp3's you can't beat ExactAudioCopy plus
LAME. You have to decide weather you want quality (go with EAC) or
Speed (go with everything else).

This is freeware site and Nero isn't. But again, if you have mp3s or wma's
on your harddrive and want to make an audio cd, Nero will convert these for
free. If yours didn't convert to cda then you didn't choose audio cd format
or set it up wrong.
What they are charging for is taking music from your disk and converting it
to mp3s on your hard drive. And the freeware programs like eac or cdex that
use lame are better for that anyway.

This is what nero is charging for:
Once the Trial period has expired, if you still like this feature, you must
purchase our MP3 plug-in to allow unlimited MP3 Conversions, or our MP3Pro
plug-in to allow unlimited MP3Pro and MP3 conversions. You can purchase the
upgrade from our website use this link

My apologies for talking about payware here.

I got the DBPower and the dMC yesterday, but what am I supposed to
convert them TO? They were mp3, so I converted them to wma. I burnt
using WMP9, and while doing, I noticed that they were being converted!
They still will not play on either my home stereo, nor o my friend's,
but they will play on her DVD player.

I don't know what version you use but if you are selecting the make audio
cd option and only that option and your mp3s aren't converting automatically
and the cdr won't play in a stereo system then the problem isn't the
software unless yours is defective. Nero express is sometimes easier to use
so maybe you can try that to make sure you are selecting the correct option.
Open nero tools and run the infotool to see the settings and if there is
something wrong.
Also download one of the free burner programs and see if the same thing
happens:

I may be a bit late coming into this thread, but if you just want to
burn audio CDs from mp3s, why don't you get DeepBurner (freeware).
You just drag the mp3 files to be burnt across & it will convert them
into audio CD files automatically before the burn process. It
creates the wav files in your windows temp directory, and
automatically deletes them when finished. It does not make any
changes to the original mp3s. It doesn't have a normalise function,
so I first process my mp3s through mp3Gain to set them all at the
correct volume. You do have to use a normal CD-R to create the audio
CD (I've heard that most CD players won't read CD-RWs).
