Hi,
I'm moving my programs from my old Win98SE machine to a newer one with
Windows XP.
I use Firefox as my primary browser and Thunderbird for email.
The programs run but I've lost things like my address book in
Thunderbird and all the inbox, sent folders, etc. Where is this data
located on 98SE so that I can move it to the new computer?
I notice that in Windows 98SE some data is in \application data but
this is a subfolder that doesn't seem to exist in Windows XP.

Any help in making this transition would be helpful.

TIA

To find application data in XP, go into documents and settings (making
sure that you have configured Folder view to show hidden folders), then
into your own log-in name folder. Thunderbird and Firefox each have a
folder there - just keep opening them like Russian dolls until you get
to the last one.

Perhaps you could try making a backup of your Firefox and Thunderbird
profiles using Moz Backup http://mozbackup.jasnapaka.com/ . Then
transfer over the backup and then restore it. BTW I haven't had a chance
to use this program yet.

The Application Data folder is located in C\Documents & Settings. Here
you will find choices for "All Users", "Default User", and one that may
contain your name or the name of the company that made your computer.
All contain an Application Data folder.

I used it when moving my Mozilla installation from my old win98 machine
to my new XP system. No trouble at all..

A general question to anyone: why do Mozilla and Firefox even use this
external folder? Why not keep everything in the main application folder?
I've never understood that.

Separating code ("executables") from data is a good design
practice. In therory -- actual implementation is another matter.

A separate place for application data is a security feature of most
operating systems. In general, apps should not have write access to
the directories where executables are stored.

I wanted to take a second to thank everyone who offered suggestions.
The winning suggestion in this case for me was to "show hidden
folders".
Once I did this I was able to (eventually) move all the necessary
profiles info over and Tbird and Ffox are now working quite well.
So thank you. It's appreciated.
