I must be doing something wrong. I go to Message>create filter from
message, delete file is checked and I click OK. But the file is not
deleted and I still get messages from the loonies. What am I doing wrong?

Thanks in advance.

Apparently "Delete message" means delete it from the server. This can
only be done by the original poster or the server admin dude.

So, I just check "Mark message read".

Works for me, YMMV,

Marking a message read won't prevent subsequent messages from the same
offending poster from being downloaded again. IIRC Thunderbird lacks a real
killfile.

I just filter unwanted stuff direct to the Trash folder which I have
set to empty when exiting Thunderbird.
I also use the filter ability to send mail from various sources
directly to specific folders so I can see mail from these specific
sources and act accordingly.
