Moving XP to new computer

I bought a copy of WindowsXP Pro about 10 years ago and have been using it
successfully so far.

I have now built a brand new computer and wish to move XP to the new machine. I
assume I cannot just install my old hard drive in the new machine. How does one
go about moving XP to complete new hardware without encountering licensing or
other problems?

Many thanks,

Johannes van Vuren.

wow, you must have been
one of the real lucky ones
to have a fancy o.s. since 1996.

unfortunately, my time displacement
machine was in the shop at the time.

why would you assume that
you cannot install the old hd on
the new pc?

Since Windows XP was released in December of 2001, and your version is 10
years ago, you must have a really early beta!!!! ;-)

You might be able to install the old HD in the new PC: there may be an
empty drive bay, and the new PC may support the interface for the old
HD; you would have to check this.

If you have an OEM version of Windows XP, you cannot use it on another
machine. If you have a retail version, you should be able to, but you
may be required to tell MS.

Thanks for your feedback. OK, It was my memory failing me. (Got only 256MB of
it, alas...). I did in fact buy XP in 2001.

Im thinking of just moving the install to the new machine rather than doing a
fresh install. The latter will mean applying all the pacthes again of which
there must have been hundreds up to now. No?

My new machine will indeed take the old hard drive without problems. But since
the motherboard is new and from a different manufacturer it problably have a
different chipset which my present installtion of XP wont recognise. No?

Johannes.

properly crossposted.

well, you will have to reactivate the machine. easy to do over the
internet. so, there really isn't a problem with moving the drive right
over- especially if it's running fine.

if you have activated it (I think 3+ times) you will then have to call
microsoft. If you have bought it, and it's a "retail" version, there's
nothing to worry about. They will guide you through it. If you have
only activated it once so far, then it should activate over the
internet just fine for ya.

You will be fine, just put the HDD in the new computer, and then follow
the activation instructions forr activating.

yeh, the o.s. will see
your new mobo as new hardware.

however, you can simply use your
win cd and do a "repair installation" to
re-sncronize the system files for
the new hardware, if necessary.

if you have the another harddrive
installed or acquired one with
the new pc, the cd may see it as well
and offer you the opportunity to
install a new o.s. on it. But it
might be helpful to only focus
on the old harddrive. After the o.s.
is snyc'd to the new mobo, then you
can connect a new harddrive as the slave.

Multiposted? *sigh*

Not quite hundreds...
(sorta like not 10 years ago when you bought
Windows XP Professional. hehe A little over-drama. *grin*)

I have a list with links below this - if you grabbed everything on
this list - installed them (after installing Windows XP) in numerical
(by KB Article #) order - rebooting when asked to - before ever
connecting to the Internet - you might (at this time) have 5-10
more to grab from the update web page.

Essentially - visit each of these pages, download the update for
Windows XP (32bit) w/SP2 and save them to an external location.
CD/DVD/USB/Network. Consider yourself an "IT Professional" in
order to get to the page with the actual file download link for each
update.

You could get away with (pretty much) installing them in the order
given.

If I were you I'd either
A.) Move all data files to a CD
B.) Use the file and transfer settings wizard (never used it) to
accomplish the same feat

then I would stick the hard drive into the new computer and see what
happens. It might not work (different CPU's etc). However, it could
work and then all you would have to do is re-activate your license.

Also as long as you're on high speed the updates will take you around 2
hours to complete. If you're on dialup then I feel your pain.
