Moving WINS from 2000 to 2003

I currently have 3 DCs. DC1 = 2003 (forest roles), DC2 = 2000SP3
(DNS/WINS/RADIUS), DC3 = 2000SP4 (DNS/DHCP).

I next plan to move DNS/WINS/DHCP to DC1 (2003) and then rebuild DC3 (SP4)
to 2003 and put AD/DNS/WINS back on DC3.

The article I've seen on moving WINS http://support.microsoft.com/?id=193820
might be ok to move the database
from DC3 to DC1, but I am interested in feedback on just stopping WINS on
the 2000 server and starting WINS on
the 2003 server.

If I stopped WINS on DC3 (SP4), install WINS on DC1 (2003) and changing all
the DHCP scopes and statics to
point to DC1 for WINS. I believe WINS has a fairly minor role in our
network and if I do this on the weekend
when nearly all PCs are off I could just rely on new WINS entries being
created on Monday morning ?

Any feedback welcomed, thanks

Unless you have a bunch of static entries in WINS don't bother. Just change
the client's WINS setting to point the the new WINS and go with it. WINS
builds/rebuilds it listing as soon as machines that use it bootup and
activate their network settings.

Do the switch before you leave for the day. When the users come in in the
mornig and startup their machines the new WINS's listing will populate
extremely fast.

The only time you need to migrate is when you would otherwise have a bunch
of "static" entries that might take a long time to reproduce on the new
machine.

Phillip,

I just pointed everything to the 2003 WINS and had no issues. Thanks

PS DHCPEXIM / NETSH did the trick for DHCP and AD took care of DNS so I'm
one step closer to having all my DCs on 2003. I have one issue with moving
IAS, but will post seperately.
