Moving update folders

B

BM

I have four folders located on the root of E: that were
created by Windows Update. I need to remove the folders
or change their location to another drive but Windows
does not allow this. The names of the folders as shown in
Windows Explorer are: 15e0d26542fd2d395fd5cfbb175bc3fa,
4688f56b319d8ddf71fa144befc,
ab752deab44fa481f43d7eff15818315, and
eaec6150a442b175a0a9c08, which is 84.5 MB in size. Each
of the folders contains subfolders to which access is
denied.
Windows XP is installed on C: and D: is the largest drive
on my system, not E:.
I now know that in future I can use Windows Catalog to
download Windows Update files to locations of my choice,
but I would appreciate very much if someone told me how I
can move my existing Update folders.

Hi,

You need to take ownership of them. Right-click the folder, select
properties. Go to the security tab and click advanced. You can take control
of the folders on the owner tab. For the security tab to appear in a WinXP
Pro system, you must disable simple file sharing in the control panel/folder
options/view tab. For a WinXP Home system, you must restart in safe mode and
logon as administrator. More details here:

Once you "own" them, you will be able to delete or move them.

Thanks Rick, that is straightforward. I do have a concern
about this however. These folders contain a lot of files
and presumably they serve a function. Will I screw things
up by moving them so that Windows doesn't know where they
are? I hope I don't have to download Service Pack 1 again
because it takes about ten hours over my dialup modem.

"PC Magazine" has a program called COA2 (Change-of-Address) that you can
run. Once you tell it the old and new locations it searches the registry and
INI files to change things. I've been using it for years and it can be
downloaded from their web site.

Hi,

It's no cncern, as they are leftovers, not something that is actually needed
at this point.
