Moving Table of Contents turns entry into hyperlink. I don't need no stinking hyperlink

Joe Williams

I've been using Word 2003 to arrange a quite simple book, a table of
contents and many small chapters. I need to rearrange the order of the
chapters from time to time. I go into Outline mode and move a chapter
title in my TOC. My problem is this: When I move a chapter title, the
title turns into a hyperlink and separates itself from the rest of the
TOC. Updating the TOC improves nothing. I would like to be able to
move chapters by shifting their titles in the TOC. I don't want any
hyperlinks; I just want the text to move and the TOC to be updateable.

What am I missing?

Thanks for any help!
Joe

I think you're confusing two different functions. You can rearrange
paragraphs and sections in Outline view, but you can't change their order by
rearranging the TOC. The TOC is dynamically built based on the order of
headings in the document and nothing you do to it (except modifying the
formatting of the TOC styles) will survive an update.

If you don't want your TOC entries hyperlinked (which they are by default),
you can (a) deselect this option when you create the TOC (it's the check box
for "Use hyperlinks instead of page numbers," which misleadingly appears to
pertain only to HTML) or (b) display the TOC field code (Alt+F9) and delete
the \h switch. See http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Formatting/TOCSwitches.htm

Not only am I probably confusing different functions, but I'm probably
confusing you by using the term Table Of Contents a bit loosely; not
only am I calling the TOC in the normal view a TOC, but I am also
referring to the listing of my Level 1 titles in Outline View as a
TOC. My book is made up of text written in Body Text and titles in
Level 1 Text. My TOC is a list of the Level 1 titles. I've finally,
through trial and error, mostly error, figured out that I can
rearrange my chapter text by (1) choosing Outline View, and (2)(do not
forget this step!) choosing 'Show Level 1' in the dialogue box in the
outline menu bar; this choice collapses all the text and leaves only
the Level 1 titles visible. If I don't do Step 2 and leave the menu
bar box as 'Show All Levels' I cannot rearrange my text by moving the
Level 1 headings; when I try to move a title, strange things happen,
the title font gets much larger (what's with that??), and when it is
actually moved, it turns into a hyperlink again.

Thanks for your help. I know that I and a world of other Word
Wannabes appreciate your attention to our ignorant questions.

I think you've succeeded in losing me. Perhaps
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Formatting/UsingOLView.htm would help you
understand Outline view better. If you have just Level 1 displayed, you
should not be seeing your TOC at all, but I can see how it would be
confusing otherwise. It's possible that when you move headings/sections, you
are promoting the headings or that Word is applying a different style. You
can cut down on that somewhat by disabling "Define styles based on your
formatting" on the AutoFormat As You Type tab of Tools | AutoCorrect.
