Moving site from one computer to another

G

Guest

I thought I'd seen this question discussed before, but a search of archives
didn't show me an answer. I've volunteered to set up a site for my church and
have done so on my own personal home computer. The church has now received a
new computer and it's being set up. Then I'll need to move the site from my
home computer to the one at the church. Hardware and software will be
compatible - Windows XPHE and FP2003.

I've referenced both online help in FP and Jim Buyens FP2003 Inside Out and
I'm confused about the process. It seems I could use the "publish" function
to make a backup copy of the site on my CD drive, or use the copy function to
copy a web site folder to a CD. (is there a difference between a web site
folder and a web site?)

What I need to end up with is a fully functional, exact duplicate of the
site that is now on my home computer on the church computer. Can someone give
me the skinny on how this is best and most effectively done?

I'm just a volunteer without great experience or deep knowledge, so I'll
understand your responses better if they're simply stated. I really
appreciate all the help you guys have given me during this process. I'm sure
I'll have more questions as we go forward. TIA

If you need more info to give an answer give a shout.

Why not just publish from the web site down to the church's computer?..I
publish from home. Why move it to church. It is much more convenient to do
it at home......I too am a volunteer webmaster for our church.

Well, there are two reasons. 1) The church wants to have the site resident on
their premises, and 2) the site is not presently hosted, we're in the process
of contracting for those services. At the present time we're doing alpha
testing using the site published to my home pages on my ISP. We hope to have
it published to the host and start beta testing within the week or so. For
those reasons I thought it might be easier to just put it on a CD and then
get it on the new computer.

We certainly could publish remote-to-local but (here's my inexperience
showing) does my sign-in name and password work from any computer?

TIA

Publishing requires FP server extensions..and she said the Church has WinXP
Home, which doesn't support a MS web server or the FP server extensions.

Your username and password will work from any computer. Since you do not
have web host yet, you can publish to CD. Open it in FP on the church
computer and then publish to the church's HD (make a folder first)..
However the next reply seems to be a bug in the ointment. He is more expert
than I am...... Millie

Now you have me confused. I have XPHome and my FP2000 works fine, including
the FP server extensions. At least I have had no problem since getting
XPHome.... Millie

If you have FP server extensions on your pc, you don't have WinXP Home. You
would have to have WinXP Pro. Home does not support a MS web server, or the
extensions.

I'm confused about that as well. I'm able to publish just fiine with my XP
Home. I'm publishing to both my ISP homepage host, as well as another site to
a regular hosting service. I just want to be able to get this site from my
home computer to the church computer.

What I need to end up with is a fully functional, exact duplicate of the
site that is now on my home computer on the church computer.

Guidance, please? TIA

Tom Pepper Willett

Yes, you can publish to a host with FP server extensions installed. That
has no bearing on your local computer.

The host server / machine must have a web server and extensions installed.

You can't publish *to* another Windows XP Home machine because it doesn't
support the web server and extensios.

I think I understand now. Could she copy the whole folder to a CD as she
suggested at first and then copy that folder to the church computer? Then
open the file on the church computer using Front Page?... Millie

Thomas A. Rowe

Judith,

Copy the folder holding the web site to a CD, then on the Church computer, open the CD, drag the
folder to the HD, then open select/open the folder in Windows Explorer, select all files and
folders. right click, uncheck Read-Only Attributes, then close Windows Explorer, open FP, then File
Menu | Open Site and browser to this folder, if FP prompts you to make it a web/site, allow it to do
so. Then once open in FP, you can publish it to the final location on the church.

Well, now it dawns on me. When I got this system with XP Home, the way I got
the web site to my hard drive was by publishing it from the web to a folder

Yes, you did so from an actual server that had the FP server extensions
