Moving HDD to new system

Scott

I just built a new computer and wanted to transfer my
old HDD with Win 2K on it to the new system.

But every time I boot the system, I get an inaccessable
boot device error.

I've checked the jumper settings, tried different cables,
triple checked the BIOS settings, but I can't get the old
drive to work in the new sytem.

If I place the drive back into the old system, the drive
boots fine.

I've been told that Win 2K doesn't like to moved from one
system to another and that I'll have to reformat the old
drive in the new computer.

Is this true or am I missing something???

Thanks!
Scott

Sounds like the drivers installed on your OS on the hard
drive are not compatible with your new motherboard or hard
drive controller. So either you need to install the
drivers while you have it in the old computer (so it will
pick it up on the new computer)or wipe it clean.

This is basically true. However, there is a good chance
that your Win2000 installation will survive the transfer to
new hardware if you replace the specific Master IDE Controller
driver with the generic Microsoft driver, prior to moving the
hard disk.

Win2000 Plug & Play will then resolve most of the other
issues. You might lose the keyboard and the mouse for
five or more minutes.

I've done this many times.

Put the disk back into the old system.
Boot Windows 2000.
Insert your Windows 2000 CD.
Choose to "Install Windows 2000"
Choose "Upgrade my existing installation"
When the computer begins to reboot, don't let it. Turn it off.
Remove the hard drive and insert it into the new computer.
Boot the new computer and complete the "Upgrade".

There 'ya go! Your new computer how has all your old software,
customizations and everything.

You might wanna Ghost the drive before you begin, just in case.
