Moving hard drive to save data

Hello All
i was wondering if any of you could tell me if this will work.
My windows XP home has died and i mean proper dead can get to
recovery(just) but no more than that. I dont mind installing over the top of
my currrent install but dont want to loose all the pics etc on the computer.
So here's the question can i simply unplug my hard drive take it to my
brothers house , who has the exact same machine , plug it in as a second hard
drive turn on his pc and let his machine boot windows and then take my data
off the second drive

As long as the hard drive still works (which I have my doubts) and the
FAT table, etc. isn't corrupted (again, questionable), and the data
isn't corrupted, encrypted, or password-protected, it should work. You
MAY need to go into the BIOS on your brother's PC to get it to recognize
the second drive.

Thanks you chaps for your comments and though null your explanation was full
of relevant detail which may well prove to be both useful and correct after
banging my head again a wall trying to get xp to work for 4 days Mike's
simple Yes managed to fill me with hope once again.
