Moving from W2000 Pro to XP Pro

I thought about upgrading to XP Pro last year, but decided against it. I
see now that MS has returned to distributing XP Pro rather than leave it
up to third party software vendors. It's selling for $244 on Amazon. Is
there somewhere I can get it lower?

I think they give way too much emphasis on the ability to upgrade an
existing Windows OS. It's a dubious advantage - along with carrying over
any existing programs you need, you also carry over a lot of dead wood
and bloat not to mention any problems that have built up with the
existing installation. Data can usually be saved.

Whichever version of XP you buy, do yourself a favour and go for a fresh
install. Don't be afraid of it - if you plan ahead, it's never as
onerous or as time-consuming as you think it will be and you will end up
with a significantly better installation.

I'm going for the full oem version from newegg complete install, $137,
32-bit. It's a little used computer with maybe 4-5 apps I use. It's
really dedicated to a specific almost around the clock application. It
should be a lot easier than when I take this 7 year old machine in a few
weeks and replace it with a new machine, x64-bit, with Win7. That I'm
not looking forward to. Lots and lots of apps.
