Well..
I finally am going to move our environment from an NT4 domain model to an
Active Directory model (2000 Server) and of course I hae some questions.
I cannot disconnect the NT4 PDC at this point, nor can I upgrade it to
W2000/Server. ALL of our users are pointed to this machine and our data
lives on it.
So - I created a new Forest and Tree - with a new domain name. And the new
W2000 Server lives in that domain at the moment. I've added all the users
and computers to Active Directory.
If I go to any of the workstations (XP-Pro) and look at Network connections,
MS Networking - I can see both domains - the old NT4 one (which all the
workstations are still members of) and the new AD one. It appears that I can
also log into either domain by selecting MS-Networking IF I have the same
login/password on both domains.
Problems I have:
When I'm ready to kill off the old domain - it will be necessary for me to
move each machine over to membership in the new domain.
If I take a workstation and have it join the new domain - it creates a new
user on the workstation for that domain, loosing all the user configuration
on the workstation. This is unacceptable since the workstations are
configured user by user. I know I can copy the user settings from the old
username/domain to the new username/domain profile - but this is really a
pain to do and requires that I create the new user on each machine
beforehand.
Anyone know of a way to avoid this?
Thanks in advance..
