Moving folder

M

Hi, someone has created a folder containing photos directly under OS&Data,
with a shortcut on the desktop.

If I move the folder into My docs, will the shortcut still work. (I guess
not!!!)

If the shortcut doesn't work after you move the folder, just right click on
the folder | Send To | Desktop (create shortcut) and you will have a new one
that does work.

You need to be a little more specific. "Directly under OS&Data" does not
mean a great deal to me.

Sorry, I thought it was obvious, I'm on windows XP hence posting on an XP
forum, if you look in my computer, there is an icon named OS&Data (C:)
(sorry, I left out the (C:). I take it that this is just a very large
folder, being almost the entire HDD.
If you look in OS&Data, you find folders such as RECYCLER, WINDOWS,
DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS and DRIVERS etc.

The folder with the Photos in it is amongst these, and personally I do not
like "common" folders amongst operating folders.

Cheers

Sorry, I thought it was obvious,

Only obvious to you. Not to us. :)

That was already presumed. :)

This is not Windows XP's default structure. For instance, there is no
such directory in C: called "OS&Data" by default. Someone (or perhaps
the OEM, and by the way it would be helpful to identify your PC) created
this directory after the fact.

FWIW, Windows XP does not come with a directory called "Photos" by
default. However there is a folder called My Pictures and this is its
location:

C:\Documents and Settings\[user]\My Documents\My Pictures

Why not just move all your photos to where you would like them?
(Presumably the standard location: in the My Pictures folder.) Then
create a desktop shortcut to it if you wish.

When you say "someone," does this mean that you had somebody work on
your PC at some point? Or did you acquire this PC second-hand?

you should leave the folder
with the pics "as is" and
only move the pic files
to your preferred location.

For what reason, why not move the whole folder?

because if I recall there is an
official "data" folder like you
mentioned that is required by
some third party programs;

however, if the data folder you
mentioned was intentionally
created by you,

then it you can move it by all
means.

Breifly, MS Win XP, Home Ed, Ver 2002, SP3, DELL Comp Corp, DELL Dimentions
Dim 2400, Intel (R) Pentium 4.
FWIW, Windows XP does not come with a directory called "Photos" by

Yes I realise that, although I also did not say that there was a folder
called Photos, (quote "The folder with the Photos in it is amongst these"),
the folder was created by my brother some years ago, and for some reason was
created directly under the OS&Data Icon under My computer. I will send a
screen shot if you would like, (can you remind me how I can do this on the
newsgroup!!)

However there is a folder called My Pictures and this is its

Yes I know that!!

WELL!! I have created several folders under My Docs, one for each of the
family, We save all our Docs and Photos in each individual folder.
When you say "someone," does this mean that you had somebody work on
your PC at some point? Or did you acquire this PC second-hand?

No, the PC was new from DELL, and as said above, the folder was created by
one of the family.

Many thank

I see. You have more than one user on this PC. Do you have more than one
profile? If so, just move all your photos to this location:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\My Pictures

Otherwise, do as I suggested before; move them all to:

C:\Documents and Settings\[user]\My Documents\My Pictures

Also, part of the confusion is that "Local Disk" was renamed "OS &
Data." I got it now. :)

(Personally, I would set up a profile for each family member that uses
this PC.)

Now if you have a number of different folders for different photos, you
can just move those *folders* to one of the proper locations already
suggested.

Or just keep them where they are. There's no law stating that they
*have* to be in any particular place. :)

That's not a folder, it is your hard drive. Someone has just given it a
label (named it) "OS&Data".

I guess what I was originally trying to fnd out is "do shortcuts follow
folders if you move then??"

By "directly under OS&Data" I meant if you open "OS&Data" the folder is
listed there amoungst all the operating folders (programs and the like)
That's not a folder, it is your hard drive. Someone has just given it a
label (named it) "OS&Data".

YES, I did reallise that it was my HDD, as that is where you would mormally
find it, directly under My Computer, and I later clarified that it had a
(C:) next to it. (omited in OP)

In one of my replies I stated "there is an icon named OS&Data (C:) (sorry, I
left out the (C:). I take it that this is just (could have used "like"
instead of "just") a very large folder, being almost the entire HDD."

Meaning, although it is the C: drive to my mind it can be likened to a large
folder which is divided into several or many subfolders, which can be
accessed by to user (apart from the parts that is used by the OS that is),
i.e apart from the OS all other folders could be removed and the entire
remaining space could be used as one large storage area.

By the way, as I have said in the past, all you folk who answer our
questions are amazing, to mirror a very famous British saying, "Very rarely
these days, does one get so much, in return for so little"

Many thanks

Steve
