moving databases between Access versions

I am currently using Access 97. Have been sent a database created in a later
version of Access (not sure which one) and when this is opened in our Access
it says "unrecognised database format". Is there a way we can fix this
problem ourselves or do we have to ask the people who sent us the database to
change the format somehow?

The latter. Newer Access can convert to older, but not the other way around.

Also, when they convert the file to Acces 97 format it will only change the
format. If there are features being used that are not supported in Access 97
they will not work after the conversion.
