Moving a catalog

I have a small Win 2000 active directory network. No mail
server. The first server in the domain is a desktop and
the second machine is a proper defined server. If I would
like to move the desktop out of active directory and use
it for another purpose do I need to move the global
catalog ?

Yes you need to make the other dc a GC. Then Dcpromo the First server down.
