Moving 12gb file... or NOT.

Greetings o ye of superior intelligence. Got a problem. I captured about an
hour of DV video from my new camcorder and since have been trying to move
that 12gb file from my XP MCE05 laptop (NTFS 80gb drive, 24gb free space) to
my portable drive (FAT32 120gb, 100gb free) so I can edit it on my more
powerful desktop. However, each time I try to either COPY or MOVE said file,
I get the following 'Error Copying File or Folder' message: "Cannot copy
[filename]: There is not enough free disk space. Delete one or more files to
free disk space, and then try again. To free space on this drive by deleting
old or unnecessary files, click Disk Cleanup" with that and an 'OK' button.
So I click 'Disk Cleanup' and proceed to clean out obsolete restore points,
office files, and the aggregate contents of my recycle bin - all to NO avail.
I'm now defragmenting the drive (I'm assuming it's talking about the
SOURCE/laptop drive being short on space, as it is defragging that drive and
not my DESTINATION/portable drive.

I've deleted and moved files, and deleted some more to get this to work.
Still same message. I'm starting to wonder if a file that size is movable?!?
Anyone with suggestions? I'll sing a song with your name in it if we get this
fixed! Thanks in advance to all!

FAT32 file size limit - 4GB.
Either break the file into pieces (file splitters, compression applications,
etc.) or format said external drive with NTFS.

I KNEW I was wasting my time... I've been trying to free space ALL DAY LONG
on both drives! Thanks SS! Any suggestions for a file splitter that would
work well on a 12gb .avi file?

OR... is there a simple way to connect 2 computers via USB for a file
transfer? I wanted to just move the file via my network, but I've got some
troubleshooting to do because neither see each other even though the're in
the same workgroup, both wired, etc.

You could set up a lan with usb, but it will be well worth it to get
your ethernet networking set correctly. It is really very easy and then
you'll have no problem transferring big files like that.

Run the Network Setup Wizard on both computers, making sure to enable
File & Printer Sharing, and reboot. The only "gotcha" is that this will
turn on the XPSP2 Windows Firewall. If you aren't running a third-party
firewall or have an antivirus with "Internet Worm Protection" (like
Norton 2005/06) which acts as a firewall, then you're fine. If you have
third-party firewall software, configure it to allow the Local Area
Network traffic as trusted. I usually do this with my firewalls with an
IP range. Ex. would be 192.168.1.0-192.168.1.254. Obviously you would
substitute your correct subnet.

If both computers are running XP Home, you don't need to do anything
else. If one of the machines is Pro, EITHER make sure the Pro machine
has Simple Sharing enabled (Folder Options>View) OR if Simple Sharing
is disabled make identical user accounts/passwords on both computers.

Then create shares as desired. XP Home does not permit sharing of users'
home directories (My Documents) or Program Files, but you can share
folders inside those directories. A better choice is to simply use the
Shared Documents folder.

If that doesn't work for you, here is an excellent network
troubleshooter by MVP Hans-Georg Michna. Take the time to go through it
and it will usually pinpoint the problem area(s) -

Two things -- as "SS" said, FAT32 limits at 4 gig (although
some stuff has problems over 2 gig). Check out the very
handy utility "scenalyzer" from http://www.scenalyzer.com/
you feed your camcorder into it (let it capture from the
camcorder actually) and it will split the input at 2 gig
chunks, scene transitions (based on jumps in the embedded
time code) and a whole bunch of other handy stuff.
I think you can also let it use your captured file as input,
but have not tried that feature. It will also capture stills
from a file as well as do "time-lapse" and strip audio tracks
from a video clip. You can download the trial version
here http://www.scenalyzer.com/download.html
Excellent program (I have used it for several years with
no problems at all).

Mike!

Two great suggestions! Scenalyzer sounds like a handy utility - I'll be sure
to check it out! And I KNOW I'll put that newsgroup to good use as I begin my
foray into big-time Hollywood-type productions!

Thanks in spades for your time & expertise, my friend!

GREAT information, Malke. I've been frustrated since jump at my network not
functioning correctly (I'm sure it had NOTHING to do with the Administor...
ME). I appreciate the time you put into your response, and I'll get that
network up & running TONIGHT... come hell or high water!

Thanks again!
